More thoughts of a recalcitrant Republican

I have always had a progressive political motive. I believe that the government should set the stage for positive educational reform, dealing with healthcare, providing an environment where people can move up in the world. I also believe that in the end it will be the individual who will succeed or not succeed and that the government’s role is to leave a paved road on which to drive.
I thought that the government could do this by removing the regulatory environment that surrounded business and turn people loose to improve their own lot. It did not work.
By any measure this country is worse off today than it was prior to the Reagan revolution. Our high schools are graduating fewer and those that graduate have fewer skills. Healthcare costs have exceeded costs in any other area of the economy yet we are caring for few people. The government is running deep deficits. The middle class is shrinking. Upward mobility from the bottom fifth of the population is the lowest of the western developed world and at the same time the downward mobility of the top fifth is also the lowest in the western developed world
We have people in this country who are starving! There is no excuse for this!
Hence ; what is referred to as the Obama revolution. Its not about Obama, its about changing the direction when we are headed.
While I cant agree with all the details; the direction seems right.

I think that another of the government's jobs is a level of protection. Maybe not always national government, maybe state or county or city. From shoddy medical drugs to shoddy building of tunnels and bridges to shoddy financial wrangling to "terrorist" threats.
