Cruise Continued

It’s the Duchesses birthday today. Southern woman do not like anyone to know how old, or in the duchesses case, how young they are. So I wont mention it.

I was going to relate with enthusiasm our day in Split. It is such a beautiful city. Probably one of the most beautiful cities I have been in. One of the best features was that the ancient roman historical city is intertwined with “shopping” so the duchess could do her thing…. And I could do mine.

However, we have just pulled into Kotor, Montegegro. Wow. Situated at the end of a long narrow bay and surround by mountains this town is fantastic. I hate that word… there must be better ones in the language to describe the sight. I can see from our stateroom a long stairs, maybe a mile in length, up a mountain to a castle. I hope we go there. As part of the former Yugoslavia, I am again impressed that the oldness of the city has been preserved. I wonder how long freedom, capitalism, private ownership and greed will take to destroy that.

The reader might think that I, Fidel Duke, am anti capitalistic. That could not be further from the truth. I love capitalism. I love business. I love the process of making money and the creativity involved. I love freedom and private property. Without all the above, we as a society stagnate. I think the government that governs least, governs best. BUT… we live in a society where the spoils of capitalism are not given equally. Which is what make capitalism work, and makes it not work. I am not convinced that the rewards of capital so far out way the rewards of hard work. Both are necessary. Our society needs the teacher of our children, as well as the creative genius of the software developer. Would we have one without the other, maybe….. Where does the obstetrician fit in the scheme of things.
